Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan takes place in the fictional land of Zama, with it’s main focus on combat and increasing power levels to become stronger and stronger. The game looks like it is inspired heavily by Dragonball Z, as the combat seems extremely fast paced and is clearly capable of chaining combos together demonstrated by the available gameplay trailers. Despite this, it is clear that Aurion references African cultures and beliefs due to the aesthetics and overall tone of the game from what I’ve seen in trailers.
The game itself seems to offer an expansive story with many environments to explore. Oliver Madiba, the studio’s founder, mentions that “The idea was to create an RPG with a ‘shonen-like’ story… The Aurion energy was already based on linking with ancestors, which is something very common in most African traditions.” The entire game takes place on a world called Auriona, this world is premised by the idea of how Africa may have evolved if the world had not been colonized.
Overall, the graphics as well as the combat gameplay look absolutely amazing. Aurion: Legacy of Kori-Odan’s Kickstarter was just recently funded and Madiba hopes it will help foster game development on Africa. He also wants to become a publisher by 2025. He says that the reason for this is to help the interest of game development in Africa grow and flourish. As a game developer myself, I heavily respect what Madiba is trying to do here. It is very hard for game developers of any status to get into the scene and become successful.
As of this article, there is no official release date for Aurion yet. The best way to support Madiba and Kiro’o Games is to buy the game when it is released. It looks amazing and they are very passionate to make this game as best as they can.
